It is a common belief that oils clog pores and ‘sit on the skin’. This is a myth. Oils protect the skin’s lipid barrier and are great at preventing moisture from evaporating from the skin. Some people believe applying oil, especially to acne-prone skin, will clog pores, cause breakouts, or leave a greasy film. The truth is, most natural oils are easily absorbed, not greasy, and noncomedogenic; that is, they have a low potential to clog pores, which makes oils perfect for all skin types. Our skin is ‘oil-loving’ and readily absorbs oils deeply. Some oils with larger molecules may absorb more slowly than lighter oils. Oils work in a multitude of ways, helping balance your skin’s natural oil production, as well as hydrating different parts of the body — face, body and hair. And it’s not just for those of you with dry skin, oils are actually great for acne-prone skin. Using mainstream lotions, and skin stripping cleansers makes the body overproduce oil, leading to clogged pores and an environment for bacteria to grow. Using an oil based moisturizers helps balance your skins own oil production. Oil moisturizers are created to harmonize with the natural oils contained in skin, and therefore are well absorbed. They penetrate deeply, carrying all the beneficial nutrients contained in the oils to the cells where repair and regeneration in the tissues occur. The efficiency and effectiveness of an oil moisturizer is superior to a cream containing wax, water and other inactive ingredients.
Creams containing waxes do clog pores and are largely ineffective for deep tissue absorption. A cream or lotion has a large percentage of filler type ingredients, thereby limiting their effectiveness compared with the 100% live ingredients in an active oil. It is not possible for a cream to be 100% pure or 100% active as it is with oil moisturizers.
Moisturizers are great at keeping the skin hydrated and healthy looking, and reducing the signs of aging; however, compared to other beauty products, moisturizers often contain the most amount of synthetic chemicals and petroleum by-products, many of which are linked to serious health concerns,
Other points that define the superior value of oil moisturizers are: Oils do not require preservatives, cream and lotions do. Oils can be cold-processed to maintain their full integrity and activity. Creams and Lotions must be prepared with high temperatures to create a bond between the water and oil ingredients. High temperatures during manufacturing diminishes or weakens any active ingredients included in the formulas.
Warming up to using an oil as your moisturizer is easy when you understand the differences and experience the results. It has been my experience that when an individual who has always used a cream moisturizer switches to an oil moisturizer for at least 2 weeks, the lighter feeling after the oil has penetrated, and the obvious results are so significantly different, they never want to go back to using a cream again.
